In the wake of last week’s debate, there has been growing concern within the Democratic Party. Despite this, few lawmakers have openly called for President Biden to step down.

Congressman Lloyd Doggett of Texas was the first Democratic legislator to publicly urge Biden to consider withdrawing from the race. "I am hopeful that he will make the painful and difficult decision to withdraw," Doggett, 77, stated.
Following Doggett's call, a second Democrat, Representative Raúl Grijalva of Arizona, has also suggested that Biden should step aside. “If he’s the candidate, I’m going to support him, but I believe this is a chance to explore other options,” Grijalva told the New York Times.
Grijalva, who represents a district bordering Mexico, emphasized, “He needs to take responsibility for maintaining that seat. Part of that responsibility includes stepping out of the race.”
Doggett, who has represented Austin since 1995 and is currently seeking re-election, said the recent debate had solidified his stance on the issue. "Rather than reassuring voters, the President failed to adequately highlight his many accomplishments and to counter Trump's numerous falsehoods," Doggett remarked.
"My decision to express these significant reservations is not taken lightly and does not diminish my respect for President Biden’s achievements," Doggett concluded.
